Time for hygge!

Denmark is known for how good we are at hygge. But what is hygge? The Independent describes hygge as “a feeling of comfort and contentment, as well as indulging in all the good things and people in your life.” Does this sound like something you'd like to have a taste of? Look no further!

Danhostel Copenhagen City is all about hygge. We value community, interaction and great service from our employees, and we have designed our hostel to bring people together – in your own little family/group, and with other guests at the hostel. Our common areas offer cozy lounges, small and large tables, games and a good vibe – perfect for spending time with your loved ones or maybe with new acquaintances from around the world.

WHAT IS HYGGE?

"Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special. Hygge literally only requires a conscious appreciation, a certain slowness, and the ability to not just be present – but recognize and enjoy the present. That’s why so many people distill ‘hygge’ down to being a ‘feeling’." - Hyggehouse

"Making the ordinary special, or meaningful, through ritualising everyday activities such as making a cup of coffee or having dinner; that means putting technology to one side, and embracing simple practices such as lighting candles, purchasing flowers, or brewing real tea in china cups." - The Independent

"Hard to explain and even harder to pronounce, the Danish word "hygge" (pronounced "hooga") has exploded in popularity around the world. It translates roughly to "cosiness," but it means so much more than that. In fact, we believe it is so important that Denmark has applied to have hygge officially added to the UNESCO cultural heritage list for 2019." - VisitDenmark
