A historical hostel
Construction of Hotel Europa
In 1953, construction began on the 15-storey Hotel Europa. The original plan was to build two identical towers on either side of Langebro, but only one was completed. On April 2nd, 1955, Hotel Europa opened its doors with 189 rooms, a bistro, kiosk, hairdresser, bank, restaurant, and rooftop terrace – where, legend has it, Frank Sinatra once stopped by...
Hotel Europa Becomes Copenhagen Penta Hotel
In 1972, Hotel Europa was renamed Copenhagen Penta Hotel and became part of the international Penta hotel chain, known for its many airport hotels around the world. In 1973, the hotel underwent renovations: the restaurant was relocated from the 18th floor to the lobby, and 12 new rooms were added – bringing the total to 200 rooms..
Copenhagen Penta Hotel Becomes HK Forbundshus
In 1980, the building was sold to the Danish trade union HK, who gradually renovated it over the years. The façade was updated, and an additional floor was added with meeting facilities. The building became home to around 200 office employees.
Danhostel Copenhagen City
Later, the property was purchased by De Forenede Ejendomsselskaber, who carried out major renovations. In 2005, the building reopened as Danhostel Copenhagen City – one of the largest hostels in Europe, with space for 1,020 guests across 192 rooms on 18 floors, including the lower ground floor.
In 2015, we gave the interior a full makeover, adding our bar and café BAR50, along with the look and style you know today.
