Copenhagen's tallest building - once...

In the old days, Langebro was a completely different bridge that they wanted to improve. Therefore, in 1948, plans were presented for a new one. The plan included two high-rise buildings on each side of the canal. Only one of the buildings was realized - however, it ended up being 18 floors high instead of the planned 15 floors. This became the building, also known as Europahuset, where Danhostel Copenhagen City operates today. In 1955, the building was completed and became Copenhagen's tallest. The property was inaugurated as Hotel Europa and housed a bistro, a kiosk, a hairdresser, a bank, a restaurant, and 189 rooms. At the top of the building was the restaurant - with a truly fabulous view from the rooftop terrace. Even Frank Sinatra himself stood here and enjoyed a cigarette back in 1956. Hotel Europa was later sold and operated as Penta Hotel, which in 1980 was sold to HK, who added another floor to the building, thus closing down the rooftop terrace. They also redesigned the facade to what it is today. The building housed over 200 employees while HK owned the building. In 2005, Danhostel Copenhagen City, Europe's largest hostel, opened after being sold to new owners. Although the building is not the tallest skyscraper in Copenhagen today, it still measures a whopping 56 meters above the ground. For comparison, both the towers of Copenhagen City Hall and Christiansborg Palace are 106 meters high. They were both built before Europahuset, but are not classified as high-rise buildings, but rather as towers.
