A royal garden for everyone

If you want to get up close to nature and enjoy the fresh air, Dyrehaven is the place for you. The nature park consists of forest areas, small lakes, and open meadows.

Dyrehaven is located north of Copenhagen and has several entrances, one of which is right by Klampenborg station. One of the most iconic features of Dyrehaven is its population of wild deer that roam freely through the forests and meadows. The animals, primarily roe deer and fallow deer, are a central part of Dyrehaven's ecosystem and attract thousands of visitors each year who wish to experience these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. It’s a unique opportunity to get close to wildlife just outside the city.

In addition to the wildlife, Dyrehaven also offers a number of magnificent forest areas that invite hiking, running, and cycling. The various trails in the forest lead visitors through a diverse landscape of beech forests, open meadows, and small lakes, providing a chance to experience nature's changing faces throughout the year.

Once, this natural area was used as hunting grounds by the royals, but now Dyrehaven is best known as a popular outing destination for Copenhageners seeking fresh air and nature on weekends. Many take the opportunity to enjoy a picnic on one of the many lawns or to take a leisurely ride in one of the rented horse-drawn carriages.

Since 2015, Dyrehaven has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as part of the parforce hunting landscape, and every year, on the last Sunday in May, the Hubertus Hunt is held—a traditional hunting festival that celebrates the royal hunting tradition and attracts thousands of spectators from across the country.

The Hermitage Castle

One of the most famous attractions in Dyrehaven is the Hermitage Castle.

In the heart of Dyrehaven, surrounded by lush forests and majestic wildlife, the Hermitage Castle stands as a gem in the Danish landscape. This impressive hunting lodge, built in the early 18th century by King Frederick IV, serves as a symbol of royal splendor and history.

The castle, with its Baroque architecture and beautiful surroundings, was originally constructed as a resting place for the royal family during the rigors of the parforce hunt, a hunting style practiced by Danish monarchs. Today, the Hermitage Castle is open to the public, offering the opportunity to explore its history and grandeur.

Every year, the Eremitage Race is held—an annual event and one of Denmark's oldest and most traditional races, attracting thousands of runners from both Denmark and abroad. The race was first held in 1969 and has since become a staple of Danish running culture. The Eremitage Race features various distances and difficulty levels, from children's races and fun runs to more challenging marathon and half-marathon distances. Participants have the chance to experience the beautiful nature of Dyrehaven while challenging themselves on the varied and hilly trails.
