Danhostel takes first step in ambitious growth strategy for Danish hostels

Danish hostels have long been overlooked, yet they hold significant untapped potential within Denmark’s hospitality industry. That is the clear message from Danhostel CEO, Maria Beck-Tange.

After ten months of preparation, Danhostel, the national network uniting more than 50 hostels across Denmark, is now launching a major strategic transformation. With a new visual identity and a renewed focus on positioning hostels as attractive hubs for community, outdoor living, and cultural and nature-based experiences, the organisation is setting out to challenge outdated perceptions.

We are putting an end to the idea that hostels are a forgotten part of the hospitality sector,” says Maria Beck-Tange.
In reality, our hostels open the door to unique and authentic experiences of Denmark’s rich culture, local traditions, and natural landscapes, far removed from outdated stereotypes of worn facilities, shared dorms, and the lingering smell of old socks.”

She continues:
These experiences are far removed from the stereotypes many still associate with hostels. Today, our hostels offer modern facilities that meet the needs of families and group travellers, both domestic and international. Located in beautiful natural surroundings and closely connected to local communities and traditions, they represent qualities that deserve much greater recognition among travellers.”

The initiative is the result of a focused effort by Danhostel’s board to strengthen the organisation’s position and ensure its members remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market. With the rise of global booking platforms and increasing competition, Chair of the Board Helle Berthold Rosenberg highlights the importance of standing together as a strong network.

This strategic shift is a collective effort to strengthen Danhostel as a brand and as a network,” she says. “We aim to support our members in a fast-changing market while ensuring that the Danhostel story reflects the quality and modern standards our hostels offer today. With this strategy, we are setting a clear direction towards 2028, so that even more travellers discover the unique experiences Danish hostels provide.

The strategy will run through 2028 and is designed to elevate awareness of the modern hostel experience in Denmark. It launches with a new visual identity and a nationwide campaign rolling out across spring and summer 2026.
